UK & Ireland Business Development Manager

Reports to: Sales Team Leader

Our client is looking for an ambitious and energetic Business Development Manager to help expand the business particularly within B2B, OEM markets. You will be working ‘from the front’ and will have the dedication to create and apply an effective sales strategy. Working with customers will involve selling not only product, but concepts and the notion of partnerships when the client becomes a strategic and critical supplier to their customers. You will need to liaise closely with engineering staff involved in new product design and development both with the client and the customer and this will involve some project management.

Primary Purpose

The Business Development Manager is primarily responsible for building key customer relationships with new and existing clients. S/he will work with staff from various departments to increase sales opportunities and maximise revenue. Key to this role will be prospecting for new business opportunities to increase overall business growth. The successful candidate will manage existing clients to ensure ongoing satisfaction and retained business. The goal is to drive sustainable financial growth through boosting sales and forging strong relationships with clients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prospect within a defined market or geographic area to ensure continual opportunities for business growth
  • Identify business opportunities, generate leads, and seek out partnerships
  • Find and win new opportunities within complex multi-stakeholder accounts
  • Manage existing clients to ensure ongoing satisfaction and retain business
  • Negotiate and close business deals
  • Use knowledge of the market and competitors to identify and develop the company’s unique selling propositions and differentiators
  • Build long-term relationships with new and existing customers
  • Strategic planning to grow business within the targeted territory and identify opportunities for campaigns, services, and distribution channels that will lead to increased sales
  • Conduct research to identify potential clients
  • Present new products and services and enhance existing relationships
  • Predict clients’ future needs and devise strategies and action plans to meet those needs
  • Write and present technical proposals
  • Work with technical staff and colleagues to meet customer needs
  • Attend industry functions and provide feedback and information on emerging trends
  • Consult with and present to senior management on business trends in order to develop new services, products, and distribution channels

Person Specification

Professional Skills / Abilities

  • Experience with optical, mechanical, or electro-mechanical capital equipment products preferred
  • Minimum of three (3) years of sales experience in a related industry
  • BSc in Engineering/Physics/Optics preferred
  • Excellent organizational, strategic, planning, and implementation skills
  • High level of critical and logical thinking, analysis, and reasoning to identify underlying principles, reasons, and facts
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship management skills with the ability to build rapport
  • Excellent attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy
  • A well-defined sense of teamwork and collaboration, including solid negotiation, conflict resolution, and people management skills
  • Proven working experience and track record as a business development manager, sales executive or another relevant role
  • Proficiency in English
