Recruiting people into new careers is something I have always taken a great deal of personal satisfaction from. That, and building businesses is what I love doing. So late in 2011, I decided to establish my own company, using my experience in the science and technology industry, to help companies with great opportunities, find great people. Today my company, Insight Management Services, improves business performance for Clients by finding exceptional new talent and supporting their marketing objectives.

We work with scientific and technical instrumentation companies, managing recruitment assignments from the MD/CEO down through the organisation but, only in Sales, Customer Support and Marketing. I have personally been involved in the scientific and technical instrumentation field for over 30 years since I started my PhD in Atomic Spectroscopy. The notion of using a range of highly complex instrumentation to characterise materials, struck a chord with me and it’s been a passion of mine ever since.

I started my career working in the pharmaceutical industry at The Wellcome Foundation where I gained experience with many analytical techniques and myriad laboratory technologies in a highly regulated environment. Wellcome was a great company, but there was something missing. I wanted to take my science background into a commercial role, so I identified a Technical Sales position with Philips Analytical (part of the Dutch electronics firm) and I never looked back.

Philips is renowned for its Sales and Management training. They provided me with an excellent grounding in the commercial world of laboratory instrumentation, not only in the UK but in many markets globally. I was quickly successful and after only 2 years became Global Sales Manager for an entire portfolio of products, building budgets for a $20m business, contributing to overall business strategy and delivering growth.  I was also very lucky to work in many parts of the world including North America where I was responsible for developing a new brand into that market.

Throughout my career, my focus has remained with laboratory and technical instrumentation in global B2B markets. I have worked at Senior Management level and gained wide ranging experience in areas such as spectroscopy, chromatography, metrology, micro and nano-positioning, optics, photonics, microscopy and imaging, with both manufacturing companies and distributors.

I have repositioned companies and business units, created and launched company and product brands, established sales and marketing functions from the ground up, built distribution networks in global markets, established subsidiaries in Europe and Asia and implemented market penetration strategies in North America.

During my career, I have had the opportunity to meet countless people from all around the world, many of them becoming friends. But my greatest motivation was to develop and grow businesses and to create jobs. I have learned that hiring someone into a new position, which is often a life changing opportunity for them, is exciting, rewarding and a real privilege for me personally.
