Thorlabs (Ely, UK) have announced plans to expand their presence in the UK. This subsidiary of the US parent based in Newton, NJ design and manufacture a wide range of high-precision motion control systems and specialised vibration isolation products used in photonics applications.
Ely, Cambridgeshire is home to the company’s UK manufacturing site where 90% of the products sold are manufactured in-house. The proposed relocation to larger facilities in the city will more than double their footprint and provide the capacity to increase their workforce to more than 500 in the longer term.
General Manager of Thorlabs UK, Keith Dhese said “We have enjoyed many years of double digit growth as a Cambridge based designer and manufacturer of precision equipment for the photonics market. We are proud to see this success continue with the design and build of our new UK headquarters, enabling us to move forward with the next exciting phase in our growth as a local employer.”
The company also intends to work with local schools to encourage students to move into the industry.
